In the open-air museum of Bokrijk one can see reconstructions of numerous buildings, village squares, farmhouses, etc., some of which date from the 15th century! The buildings and squares give you an idea of Flemish provincial life of centuries ago. The area around the open-air museum consists of woodland and lakes. Our trip includes a guided tour through the open-air museum in the morning. Imagine being a farmer in a farmhouse of lower Belgium (Oost-Vlaanderen, West-Vlaanderen), the 'lady of the house' in one of the historical houses from Antwerp or an innkeeper in the Kempen region…
In the afternoon, we will visit the oldest city in Belgium: Tongeren. It was founded in 15 BC as a base and supply station for the Roman troops in the Rhine region, and rapidly developed into a major trade center. A guide will lead us through the Gallo-Roman museum and the city center, with the Basilica of Our Lady, the beguinage and of course the statue of Ambiorix, king of the Eburones and leader of the resistance against Rome. Caesar's defeat led to the famous quote "Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae" (of all the Gauls, the Belgae are the bravest).
