Antwerp, Belgian's second city, has many attractions. It is one of the
world's largest ports, the world's diamond processing center and a true fashion
city. It also has a large orthodox Jewish community. On top of that, Antwerp
offers a great range of fantastic museums and public buildings, such as the
Royal Museum of Contemporary Art, the Rubens House, the Plantin Moretus Museum,
the Diamond Museum, etc. The cathedral, the largest one in Belgium, is the
city's landmark. In front of the imposing city hall you will see the
hand-throwing Brabo who gave Antwerp its name (Antwerpen-Handwerpen). The
Antwerp zoo, close to the central station, is one of the oldest in the world.
We combine a historical tour of Antwerp with a visit to Fort
Breendonk, a prisoner's camp that is the symbol of the Nazi terror in Belgium
during WWII, located not so far from Antwerp. After a short introduction,
the tour takes us through the kitchen, the office of the SS-Officers, the
prisoner’s cells and many other historical places. Numerous videos, photographs
and descriptions as well as background sounds enrich the visit and give a feel
of what Breendonk used to be. The tour was completely renewed and extended in
2003. Historical places, never before opened to the public, are now part of the
visit.
