Onderzoeksgebied:
cultuur en maatschappij van laat Egypte met nadruk op de Ptolemeeëntijd en het Demotisch (papyrologie, epigrafie, documentaire en literaire teksten, grammatica).
Mark Depauw behaalde zijn doctoraat in 1998 met de studie en uitgave van een Demotisch familiearchief. Na een fellowship in Oxford (University College) en een Humboldt-Stipendium (Keulen) keerde hij terug naar de K.U.Leuven waar hij sinds 2000 als Postdoctoraal Onderzoeker van het FWO (Vlaanderen) actief is. In 2003 ontving hij de Prijs van de Onderzoeksraad Humane Wetenschappen, en in 2004 de Sofja Kovalevskaja-Prijs (1 miljoen euro) van de Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung, om een onderzoeksteam op te zetten aan de Universiteit van Keulen. Sinds 1 oktober 2006 is hij voltijds aan de K.U.Leuven verbonden met een BOF-ZAP-mandaat.
In 1997 publiceerde hij de Companion to Demotic Studies , een oriënterend handboek voor de studie van het Demotisch, een taal- en schriftstadium van het Oud-Egyptisch (ca. 7e eeuw vóór tot 5e eeuw na Chr.). De kern van zijn doctoraat verscheen in 2000 als The Archive of Teos and Thabis from Early Ptolemaic Thebes . Een boek over Demotische brieven met de titel The Demotic Letter. A study of Epistolographic Scribal Traditions against their intra- and intercultural background is in druk aanvaard. Daarnaast zijn een dertigtal artikels over Demotische teksten en hun culturele en maatschappelijke achtergrond van zijn hand. Zijn huidig onderzoeksproject betreft meertaligheid in Grieks-Romeins Egypte en de invloed daarvan op schrijverstradities..

Research interests:
culture and society of late Egypt, focusing on the Ptolemaic period and Demotic (papyrology, epigraphy, documentary and literary texts, grammar).
Mark Depauw's Ph.D. (1998) studied a Demotic family archive. After a fellowship in Oxford (University College) and a Humboldt-Stipendium (Cologne) he returned to the K.U.Leuven, where he is active since 2000 as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the FWO (Vlaanderen). In 2003 he received the Prize of the Research Council for the Humanities, and in 2004 the Sofja Kovalevskaja-Award (1 million EUR) of the Alexander von Humbolt Foundation, to set up a research team at the University of Cologne. Since 1 October 2006 he has a full-time research professorship at the K.U.Leuven.
In 1997 he published the Companion to Demotic Studies , a guide for the study of Demotic, a cursive form of hieroglyphs and a linguistic stage of the ancient Egyptian language (ca. 7 th century BC until 5 th century AD). The core of his doctorate appeared in 2000 as The Archive of Teos and Thabis from Early Ptolemaic Thebes . A book on Demotic epistolography with the title The Demotic Letter. A study of Epistolographic Scribal Traditions against their intra- and intercultural background is in print. He has written about thirty further articles on Demotic texts and their cultural and social background. His current research project deals with multilingualism in Graeco-Roman Egypt and its repercussions on scribal traditions.
