The research unit Ancient History studies the Graeco-Roman world from about 800 BC to 650 AD, mainly on the basis of written sources.
The research unit contains two sections. The section 'Hellenism' focuses on documentary sources, the section 'Ancient Historiography' on narrative sources.
The research unit Ancient History is responsible for the publication of the journal Ancient Society (38 volumes since 1970) and the series Studia Hellenistica (46 volumes since 1942). Both publications have a strong international profile.

The research unit Ancient History is a member of the Institute for Classical Studies, which gathers several research units at the K.U.Leuven studying the history, culture, literature and philosophy of Graeco-Roman Antiquity and its impact on Western European cultural history.
